Thomas was a Deaflympian not once but 6 times since 1981 and have been very actively involved in the sport of Track & Field for over 20 years. Thomas is currently the Head Coach for Gallaudet University Track & Field team. Overall in his career he has had 20 years of coaching experience. Thomas currently holds USATF Coaching Level 2 Certification. In his coaching career he has sent approximately 10 athletes including himself to the Deaflympics.

He was a Deaflympics Throwing Coach as well as an athlete in 1993 and 1997 and was the Deaflympics Team Coordinator in 2001 while an athlete.

Thomas has had first hand experience in leading a team overseas, he had brought a team to the 2000 PANAMDES in Havana, Cuba, 2001 Deaflympics in Rome, and 2002 Youth PANAMDES in Venezuela. His roles on those teams had varied from preparing logistics for the trip, getting apparels and implements for the teams, and coordinate daily operations.

During his role as the Deaflympics Team Coordinator in 2001 he assembled the USA team for the Deaflympics in Rome including the coaches and athletes. He oversaw the fundraising projects, provided equipments, uniforms and shoes for the team. Supervised the training program during the training camp and at the Deaflympics.
