2005 USA/Deaflympics Track/Field Head Coaches Criteria


Time Frame:
All applicants for the Head Coach positions shall submit a letter of interest, resume, three (3) letters of reference (two professional and one personal), documented evidence of fundraising projects including cash and in-kind value, and documented evidence of program development to the USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach Selection Committee by April 22, 2003. USADTF will submit the selected Head Coach to the USADSF Board by May 6, 2003 for approval. Announcement of the selected Head Coach shall be made by May 16, 2003.

Upon approval of the Head Coach, he/she will proceed advertising for the Specialty Coaches. The deadline for submitting names to the USADTF Board for approval is June 6, 2003. The USADTF Board will recommend the selected Specialty Coaches to the USADSF Board by June 27, 2003.


Coaches Selection:
Selection of the USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach shall be based on the recommendation by USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach Selection Committee;
Once selected, the USA Deaflympics Track/Field Head Coach will recruit and recommend the specialty coaching staff to the USADTF Board for approval. (See Specialty Coaches Criteria for details)

The criteria herein should be announced and advertised. Information regarding the Head Coach position shall be distributed separately through, but not limited to, e-mail, e-DTFNL (e-newsletter) affiliated track and field organizations (USA Track and Field, USADTF, member regions, and USA Deaf Sports Federation website), deaf publications, clubs, high school associations, and universities, wherever practical.

USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach Selection Committee:
Five (5) members of the USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach Selection Committee, appointed by the USADTF President, shall consist of the following:


General Responsibilities:
The USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach shall be responsible for recruiting, training, and preparing the 2005 USA Deaflympics Team. The Head Coach shall work closely with the USA Team Director of the 2005 USA Deaflympics Team on the following expectations:

Minimum Qualifications:
The USADTF Board shall recommend to the USADSF Executive Board the candidates to serve as the Head Coach of the USA Deaflympics Track and Field Team.


Recommendations to USA Deaf Sports Federation for Designation of 2005 USA Deaflympics Coaches:
Based on selected Head Coach’s positive performance and successful discharge of the general responsibilities with the USA Deaf Track and Field as outlined in this criterion, the USADTF Board shall recommend the selected coaches to the USADSF Executive Board as Specialty coaches of the 2005 USA Deaflympics Track and Field Team.


Due Process:
All applicants shall have the right to obtain due process in accordance with the provisions of the USADSF and USADTF bylaws, if they feel any part of the selection process is biased.

NOTE: The weight on Scoring to be used by the USADTF Deaflympics Head Coach Selection Committee to assist determines the strength of each candidate. However, the committee reserves the right to weight in other factors not mentioned here.

2 points - 3-7 years

4 points - 10-15 years
5 points - 15+ years

USA/Deaflympics Track/Field Specialty Coaches Criteria


The role of the Specialty Coach shall be to work with the Head Coach in a position to be defined by the Head Coach. The Specialty Coach shall be expected to commit to the general expectation as outlined below. The general expectations are as follows:

  • To assist with preparation for the USADTF Trials;
  • To assist Head Coach on preparation of the USA Deaflympics Track and Field Team;
  • To assist Head Coach on recruiting of athletes;
  • To participate with Head Coach on evaluation and placement of athletes on USA Deaflympics Track and Field Team;
  • To work closely with Head Coach on clinics and training to potential athletes, if any;
  • To maintain expressive and receptive in American Sign Language throughout the term.


Mandatory Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be at least 25 years old;
  • Be a US citizen;
  • Possession of a valid government-issued identify card;
  • Possession of a US passport;
  • Possession of a USATF Coaching certificate - Level I, II or III or equivalent;
  • Possession of a valid basic first aid, CPR, and coach's safety training card;
  • Member of the USA Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF), and the USA Deaf Track and Field (USADTF);
  • Awareness of and adherence to the USADSF and USOC Code of Ethics;
  • Knowledge of USADSF and USADTF Due Process procedures.
